Juggletween is 20 years old today

It was an early experiment in collaborative juggling video creation, a year before youtube existed. Jugglers from around the world were given secret instructions on how to start/end their clips without knowing who else was involved or what they were filming. I then collected the clips and assembled them into the final video.

The rec.juggling post announcing the video:
https://groups.google.com/g/rec.juggling/c/l_PBGsVfWKM/m/bY7EEd-yxbsJ

The video is still available on juggling.tv (I can't put it on youtube due to copyright music):
https://juggling.tv/1836

It's interesting to watch it now, partly to see how far the standard of internet juggling has risen, but also to see how much the technology has changed. 20 years ago, people were still shooting interlaced pal/ntsc video on camcorders.

I had a real struggle deinterlacing the clips 20 years ago, and I think I'd make a better job of it today... but I've been through my archives and unfortunately I can't find the original clips.

So it is what it is... happy birthday juggletween!

The Void - - Parent

Funny, I've just been de-interlacing an almost 20-year old video for a pal.

That was a fun rewatch/reread. (I seem to have been surprisingly quiet at the time.) I remember JTween II(*) being lots of fun too. These videos later inspired me to make a kendamatween (Ooh, was that 9 years ago now? Coo.), albeit with only 3 people...
https://jugglingedge.com/forum.php?ThreadID=2240#Small16144 (Hey, Marvin, fix the embed, would you, please?) (*)
...so thanks again.

Anyway, happy birthday.

* Or see the "Related videos" on the JTween JTV page

Marvin - - Parent

I'm fine thanks for asking

Orinoco - - Parent

I actually remember most of that!

I enjoyed the WJVF around the same era too. I think because it was so much more of an effort for creators back then I appreciated them more.

Thanks for your efforts back then, I consider you a giant upon which the yoof of today stand.

Out of interest though: what type of biscuit went into the process?

Little Paul - - Parent

Hard to say for sure, but they were most likely own brand plain chocolate digestives paired with a strong cheddar

Kelhoon - - Parent

I read something recently about youtube and an AI to remove copyrighted music. I can't recall if it was ready yet or not, but when it is that might help

sorry, I wish I could remember more details and even a link to paste for you

I remember liking the idea and the video though and thought some of the transitions were quite clever.

Little Paul - - Parent

I can replace the audio easily, but then it’s not the same video…

Kelhoon - - Parent

True

Little Paul - - Parent

And of course… if I changed the music MK ringing the doorbell wouldn’t line up quite so perfectly 😀

Bungay Balls Up 2024 reviews and photos thread

I’ll start, in a scattered memories style…

“My kids are dicks”
Coffee and crossword mornings by the bee-haunted buttercups.
The bounce slab being flat, then in a cradle at the right height, which was then reduced to the wrong height.
Louise crawling out of the woodwork to make a long-overdue reappearance for just one day. And laden with actual printed photos (remember them?) of conventions from ’97-’03, prompting multiple sessions of “what was his name?” “Do you remember her?” “Oh blimey, look at [so-and-so], doesn’t he look a pillock/really young/exactly the same/nothing like himself” etc etc.
Someone's box of eco-friendly toothpick/flosser combos. Apart from the nylon.
Dan leading a “walk around the farm”. Oh, *around* the farm, right. Talk of types of wheat, etc. Cool.
Remembering to bring along the £5 cricket set, and remembering to get it out to have a knockabout game. Retiring not-out with the top score. However, crick(et)ing my back was far from ideal, which left me distinctly hampered in my mobility for the rest of the convention (and the week after, to be honest). Some volleyclub would have been nice, or maybe just a little bit of club passing. Oh well. It also meant I didn't make any off-site trips this year. I expect Southwold will still be there in 2025...
Lynne hosting a cake party in Aged Jugglers’ Corner. Generally laughing a lot there.
Texts from Louise. She’s *definitely* coming back, I’ll put money on it.
Watching Stuart (Stewart?) struggle to get his Revolution to behave itself, but eventually getting it airborne.
Nigel's excellently silly Wee Monsters game.
Managing to get - despite the dodgy back - a qualifying run of 5 (proper) clubs in the buttercups, after not practising at all (well, maybe once?) since last year. And also a new (to me) kendama combo.
Trying a proffered radish. I remain neutral on the matter.
Cubing a little bit (same as ever), watching others cube. Forgot to bring my X-shaped cube thingy. Next year.
<generic European accent>You are a great juggler! You can do it!</gEa>
Dinner at Monte’s. Cheers mate. Must dive into that bramble jelly soon…
Sitting around the woodburners chatting nonsense. “So, when did I first meet you?”
Scrabble with Lynne, and notching up 5 more “observer comments”.
The general progression of the poker tourney being somewhat skew-whiff, ("is he allowed to do that?") I was delighted to end up heads up against Monte at the end. I had the lower stack by some way, so a deserved win for Mr Once-A-Decade. Stirling dealer work from Ron, too. Jon P doing well in his first tourney after only learning to play a few days earlier. I've worked out that after 17 BBU tournaments, I am £1 in profit. I’ll take it! :-)
Crackerdash (“Crackerdash!”?) aka The Cheese Game being a thinly-veiled excuse to eat cheese. Not sure about the hot-cross bun flavour cheese, but the Seville Orange chutney went down well. (And still is - thx Mark/Kate!)
The strange acoustic effect in the games tent, but only if you were sitting in *that* chair. But generally the games tent being ace.
“Have you got a rake?” provoking the appearance of a mower, which proceeded to be expertly steered through the midsts of a croquet game. One in which 5 players started, two were substituted, everyone got posted, two retired, and Farmer Paul eventually won. Classic BBU croquet.
Chocolate. Thanks fak and other wielders.
Saw John R doing 3 club flats, but reaching a hand up to catch each club at the peak, and turning it back down before throwing again. Very nice trick, which I spectacularly failed to get anywhere with when I tried it. Can I blame the bad back? Okay, cool, thanks.
Taking a wander around the farm, I encounter the Trans Am Truck which I’ve not visited for some time, and find it’s now surrounded by 3 youngish but thriving oak trees. Robbie tells me there's a Muntjac deer he keeps spotting at the far end of that field too. I speculated that the various piles of tree trimmings along the path were there for the benefit of insects and other wildlife. Later Paul told me “Ah, no, I just haven’t got around to clearing them up yet!”. Found the rake. It’s up by the hay barn, in case anyone’s still looking.
Alice having the car reversed into at low speed by a muppet. Still, that’s all on his insurance.
Again, despite the back, managing a couple of games of table tennis v Monte. Result as expected, but I wasn’t awful.
The cat-sitter sending regular updates and pics. Meeting Raedwald again, and - almost - Cali, Tigger and Harry. Didn’t spot any kittens though.
I took a particular book along vaguely intending to run a quiz, but my tuits were all square.
Didn’t manage much reading at all actually. I blame the pleasant company.
Being on the point of cutting myself a slice of Jon & Sam's fruit cake when "or there's coffee cake if you like" was uttered in the nick of time. Close call, but much thanks to all concerned.
Annotating a crossword for Paul. Not writing any crossword clues all week. “Had any more crosswords published?” almost becoming a catchphrase. (A few, but not many, ta. One coming up this month…)
Susannah’s spin, spike, smile.
Some clear skies, and bright stars.
Taking the decision not to join in with the potential cat-herding chaos of a club passing line in the buttercups, all filmed by Silver’s drone. I really enjoyed sitting in a deckchair close by, watching it all unfold. Yes, I think “unfold” is the word I want there. :-)
Managing to have a coffee-and-cake catch-up chat with Will after merely seeing him mooching about for several days. And that turning out to be just in time, as he was leaving very soon after.
“As we say in ham radio, ‘7-3’, best wishes!” (And yes, the other poker games very much going along those lines.)
Fixing the embedded player in the blog entry of the newly-released #OffGridPod episode from a field, even though I was allegedly off-duty. (Why, yes, this one *does* feature some unusual cricket facts, thanks for asking: https://offgrid.tlmb.net/2024/05/26/seaside-banking-standards-40/ )
Cribbage. “Do you say all the rhymes?” Of course.
Sunday seedy roast at the café. No parsnips though.
Bemasked hugged being, sadly, still the sensible option.
Loopy Lou came back. Told you. More photos, more “ooooh!” memory sessions.
Hare And Tortoise, M**, Perudo.
Oh, I’ve just remembered my pass is still in my jacket pocket. I really must get around to sewing the backing on.
(As I said elsewhere) I’ve updated the _old_ site pages https://tlmb.net/BBU/Archive.html and https://tlmb.net/BBU/Video.html , fixing the embeds and repairing some old broken links via the Wayback. (Use real websites, folks, not evil data-harvesting silos! Get a wordpress. </rant>) I’ve also added a few short videos to the end of my photos page: https://tlmb.net/blog/bbu-2024/ (scroll down!)
I know some of you want BBU tees/hoodies (again). I’m working on it.

But anyway, all in all, it was lovely. Great to see you all - you’re ace. Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

I think it’s a kind of chop really?

It’s a good trick to run, too, all feels very precise when it works. Thank you for the kind words!

The Void - - Parent

Thinking of it as a chop helped a tiny bit when I just tried again, ta. Didn't get much further though, so today I'm blaming the wind. Hey, this juggling thing's quite fun, isn't it? Maybe I'll try it a bit more....

"Aged Jugglers Corner" - sounds perfect, one more reason to want to do a BBU one day, might have to get knobbly tyres and 4WD on a mobility scooter though

Richard Loxley - - Parent

Mobility scooters are very welcome - we already have two visitors who use mobility scooters/wheelchairs on the field, and this year we added a toilet block with an accessible toilet complete with an electric lift.

As we all age, and our ailments get more complex, the volunteers are very keen to make the field as accessible as possible for all. Both because those people that need it are our friends, and also because many of us will probably need it eventually.

Kelhoon - - Parent

Thanks Richard, luckily I don't have to use a scooter yet, but by the time I retire and do some travelling, who knows

Denie Kony -

Hey ya’ll!
I am Denie (she/her)! I got back to juggling after many years and I am just slowly getting back to shape. I juggle with balls and got myself clubs last month. I have also been a dancer for over 15 years and would like to bridge that to my juggling. Still no idea how to do that, but that’s why I am here! Any tips are much appreciated <3
Been looking at Liza van Brakel, Ricardo S. Mendes and Kouta Oohashi so far for inspiration, still no clue how to do anything similiar to what they do.
Anw happy to be here.

The Void - - Parent

Hi Denie, welcome.
Not a dancer myself, but Gandini Juggling have been incorporating dance/movement with juggling for years now. You might like to check out some of their vids. https://juggling.tv/users/616/Gandini

Hi, welcome to the site,

Have you looked in to contact juggling (aka object manipulation) ? I ask because it's the kind of thing I imagine would go well with dancing.

Someone else for you to find videos of would be Viktor Kee, I tend to think of some of his stuff as kind of dance-y and artsy.

Enjoy learning new things !

Kelhoon -

TIL there are "bluetooth" balls which make sounds when caught or dropped (based on strength of impact possibly)

A bloke at work got some for thingmas, he said he has made the catch sound the sounds of a shotgun cocking and the drop sound a shotgun going off

Modern wonders eh ?

What sound(s) would you pick ?

I think I'd go with maybe catch = tick and drop = bomb exploding, so tick tick tick tick ... boom !

or maybe something more peaceful like catch = drip, drop = splash, so drip drip drip drip ... splash

The Void - - Parent

Catch sound: a single clap - get a round of applause for as long as you juggle. And therefore drop sound: "Boo!"
Definitely wouldn't get really annoying really quickly, I'm sure.

Orinoco - - Parent

I'd go with a duck's quack for a catch & the sad trombone for a drop.

Little Paul - - Parent

I’m feeling all nostalgic for annoyingly noisy props of the past… so load them up with samples of chatter-rings, shaker cups and “audiballs”

Kelhoon - - Parent

hmmm howabout a mix of Void's and Orinoco's ideas, claps for catches, and wah wah sad trombone for drops

LP, no bleeps and bloops from your telephone exchange ?

Danny Colyer - - Parent

I'd be tempted by "Sack the juggler!" for the drop.

Juggling endurance and strength question

Given that juggling, especially endurance juggling, is small weights and high repetitions and you need to build up strength and stamina to juggle for a length of time, I was wondering, for example, if you wanted to be able to juggle 5 x 65g balls for 1 minute, how many minutes can/should you be able to juggle 4 for ? how long for 3 ?

I'm wondering what sort of curve would be produced for 3, 4, 5, 6, ...

side thought, would the records page here be a good indicator given it's personal bests rather than averages

I don't juggle as much as I used to and have definitely lost some ability, endurance, tricks, patterns etc, but I still try to throw and catch a few things once a week or so and I still lurk here regularly and still have an interest in juggling and other circus skills. I once juggled 5 for just over 100 catches, nowadays I can only flash or qualify a small fraction of attempts, yet 3 ball cascade and some 3 ball tricks I can still do on muscle memory alone.

7b_wizard - - Parent

{ I was thinking about your question and yesterday I checked if the new 8b worldrecord were already listed ( and it is ) ... }

https://juggle.fandom.com/wiki/World_records

... so going by ball (world)records - there or here - I'd say is an indicator for how hard or difficult it is to endure for as long as can.

.. but then, only 1 minute with 5b 65 g balls - hm ... the difference is not so great then, so that maybe being able to do e.g. nearly 2 minutes with 4b could already suffice.

I'm not sure - it's a difficult question with many unknown variables...

Mïark -

If you have poi whose strings have got too short, don't worry - you can use them as a cordless skipping ropes; like this one I recently saw in a shop:

www.flyingtiger.com//products/cordless-skipping-rope-for-exercise-3043993

[cordless skipping ropes are likely available in other shops - this is not an endorsement]

7b_wizard - - Parent

easier triples without stumbling into the rope

Kelhoon - - Parent

or just use them as short poi, the Maori use both long and short poi

The Void - - Parent

This seems a lot like they somehow ended up with a product, and then had to come up with a way of marketing it.

Unfortunate news.

Hi all. Many of you here will have met my fiancé, Simon.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, he had a seizure. Paramedics were present within a few minutes, but the seizure lead to a cardiac arrest that caused an unsurvivable brain injury. He passed away today, surrounded by family.

We don't have any answers as to why he became so ill so quickly.

He is loved greatly and will be very sorely missed.

Hi Tom,
Well, that's bloody awful. I'm really sorry to hear the news.

Dear Tom,

I'm sitting here getting over my second hip replacement and I was going over all my log in's and passwords for all my sites. I finally logged back into Juggling Edge after probably years away, given that I hadn't been posting about Game of Throws or WJD. I just found your message and just wanted to send you love from Lisa and I here in Cali. I know it's been some time since you posted, but I still wanted you to know that you're in my thoughts, my brother.

respectfully,

Cirque du Soleil Best of Juggling

For those who haven't seen it yet (it came out Friday): https://youtu.be/MTpd7Xd1DA0

For some reason there is a shortened version of Anthony Gatto's act, while Viktor Kee is way, way too long (ahem, I've just never liked Viktor Kee's act... Question of taste I suppose, as a lot of people seem to like it!)

In terms of show I love Gabriel Beaudoin in Kurios, because it's not a separate juggling act but fits into a larger piece.

A lot of other cool acts in there!

Kelhoon - - Parent

I enjoyed that.

2 acts stood out to me, 1st the light-up balls in the cone and 2nd the bounce juggling on ice.

The 1st because I think it's one of the better uses of light-up balls that I've seen, the 2nd because I kept thinking wet silicon would be so tricky to juggle.

Chris Freemantle -

I'm mid 60's. Used to do a little bit of juggling / balancing a broom on my foot / spinning a plate or tray (people didn't like it when I did it with their best plate ;-). With lockdown have sort of started with 3 balls again - muscle memory is not bad, but reactions have taken a little knocking. I suppose I'm aiming for 5 balls, but may revise! Also learning to unicycle. What I really wanted to ask on the forum is : fountains are normally done with the same number of balls in each hand. While I understand it would likely be VERY difficult, is there any intrinsic reason you can't do fountains with, say 3 balls in one hand and 2 in the other, or 2 balls in one hand and 4 in the other? I've tried the trivial case of one ball in one hand (OK, not really juggling) and two in the other - seems possible with a bit of practice.

The Void - - Parent

Hi Chris,
Yes, you can do split-number fountains. I've done 3-2. The issue is that it means you're doing different rhythms with each hand, which does tend to mess with your head!
Try it anyway, it's a fun challenge,
Cheers,
Void

Mike Moore - - Parent

Hi Chris, welcome!

Here are a couple examples that I did a few weeks ago of what you're describing.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B89UxqdgB3w/

Kelhoon - - Parent

You could do a 3-2 fountain as Void described and also (if you understand site-swap) as 666660 i.e. 3 in one hand, 3 with a hole (leaving 2) in the other, couldn't say which was the easiest. Click the highlighted numbers to get an idea of what it looks like.

Tufty - - Parent

There's different ways of doing these, as pointed out previously, and it's all a bit patting your head and rubbing your stomach.

Probably the easiest is with a "hole", much like practising 5 balls with 4, or, indeed, doing a 3 ball columns pattern but in a fountain. I found this easier to do "in sync", but it's harder to get into from a cascade.

Next easiest for me was with differing heights. For 5 balls this would be 6s in one hand and 4s in the other, the feel is a bit like 534 with 4 balls. Pretty easy to get into from a cascade, you could probably swap sides too but that would mean being able to do the 6s with the non-dominant hand, something I never managed. It could probably evolve into something like 645 (I think that works)

Then there's the in-and-out-of-sync way, which I never managed to get my head around for more than a few throws. Its throwing "half a hole" with one hand, and it's a horrible headfuck.

I've never tried any of these with anything more than 5 balls, cause I'm crap at numbers.

Cedric Lackpot - - Parent

> is there any intrinsic reason you can't do fountains with, say 3 balls in one hand and 2 in the other, or 2 balls in one hand and 4 in the other?

It's sometimes referred to as polyrhythmic juggling and was explored in some detail a few years ago by Joost Dessing amongst others. If you are lucky there might be some old videos lurking on the web.

Whatever happened to Joost?
