ACT CREATION WORKSHOP WITH CIRQUE DU SOLEIL'S STEVEN RAGATZ
FROM :
16 to 19 of july (4 whole days)
Just before the first french national convention in Carvin (two hours by car from the workshop site)
CONTENT :
This workshop is intended for jugglers who wish to create an act, continue development on an act in progress, or refine an already written act. Topics covered range from theoretical to practical, from conceptual to realization, and from inspiration to execution, with the end goal being to develop a juggling act that meets each individual student\'s needs and will further their own progress as a performer. Daily schedule will include both lecture and group presentation/feedback sessions.
Inspiration from other art forms
Graphing music visually
Using rules to guide the technique
Difference between showing off and performing
Time based vs. task based training
By the end of the workshop, I would like to have the students assemble an act journal that contains:
Concept images (10)
Music samples (5)
Color scheme and props
Costume images (5)
As well as a 20 or thirty second phrase that exemplifies the act they wish to create. I don\'t know what sort of available resources will allow them to do the research part, so I guess we would have to just make do with what is around.
I apply concepts and tools to my own work, but have little experience translating those techniques to others. It will greatly depend on how advanced the students are and what sort of routines/acts they wish to develop.
STEVEN RAGATZ\' BIO
Steven Ragatz has been entertaining audiences with his juggling, physical comedy, stilt walking and general antics for over two decades. Now an eight year veteran of the French Canadian circus, Cirque du Soleil, Steven has performed throughout the world. Apart from performing, Steven\'s academic credits include teaching circus arts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas theater graduate program.
Steven holds a B.A. in Variety Theater (the only one!) and an M.S. in Computer Science from Indiana University. He studied mime, stage movement and juggling with Fred Garbo, Tony Montanaro, George Pinney, and Michael Moschen. When not touring with the circus, he resides in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife, Lisa, and their two children, Andrew and Melissa.
Steven Ragatz is a variety artist who is equally at home while entertaining at a corporate banquet or in an arena filled with 40,000 spectators. A versatile and seasoned performer, he impresses crowds with quality and professional presentations. A veteran of theaters, galas and circuses for twenty years, Steven has proven time and again to be an asset to every show. Whether juggling, walking on stilts or teetering atop tall unicycles, his performances leave audiences cheering, laughing and applauding for more.
